If your lots suddenly refuse to save to your Library in The Sims 4, you’re not alone.
Sometimes the game shows a “Server error”. Other times, it looks like the lot was saved successfully, but nothing appears in the Library.
This issue is surprisingly common, especially on Windows and for players who use mods.
Why Does This Happen?
The Library is stored locally on your computer. That means this is usually not an EA server issue. It’s something interfering with your local files.
- Corrupted Tray folder
- Windows blocking folder access
- OneDrive syncing conflicts
- Outdated or broken mods
- Cache corruption
How to Repair the Sims 4 Library Save Error (Windows)
Step 1: Delete Cache Files
Close the game completely. Go to:
Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4
Delete:
- localthumbcache.package
- The “cache” folder
- The “cachestr” folder
Launch the game and test saving a small lot.
Step 2: Check the Tray Folder
Your Library saves are stored here:
Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 > Tray
Right-click the Tray folder, open Properties, and ensure:
- It is NOT Read-Only
- Your Windows user has Full Control under the Security tab
Step 3: Test Without Mods
Move your entire Mods folder to your desktop. Delete localthumbcache.package again and launch the game without mods.
If saving works now, a mod is causing the issue.
Step 4: Check Windows Controlled Folder Access
Open Windows Security > Virus & Threat Protection > Ransomware Protection.
If Controlled Folder Access is ON, allow:
- TS4_x64.exe
- EA App
This ensures the game can write files to your Documents folder.
Step 5: Hard Reset Test
Move the entire “The Sims 4” folder from Documents to your desktop. Launch the game so it generates a new folder.
Test saving a lot. If it works, your original folder had corrupted files.
Final Thoughts
This bug is frustrating but usually fixable. It’s almost always a permission issue, corrupted Tray file, or mod conflict — not permanent damage.
If you’ve experienced this, what fixed it for you?
